80s handlebar tape

Hi all

Anybody know what kind of bar tape would have been fitted in 1982,I am restoring a Gitane National.

The National model is pictured the 1982 British Gitane Catalogue in the catalog section of this site.

All of the bikes pictured in the catalogue have black handlebar tape. I was probably a glossy thick plastic type of tape.

The Gitane team bikes had the bars re-wrapped everyday during a race. They used both cloth tape - usually white or blue and Benotto cellophane tape in blue or yellow.

Thanks for the quick reply,I will probably use cloth tape as I don't think the plastic tape is still available.
